However, it’s important to time your exploration right – if the tide is up, you won’t be able to access them. Keep an eye on the Willy weather app for updates. You may spot a variety of creatures like crabs and fish hiding amongst the rocks or darting away when disturbed.
Make sure to keep a close watch over small children as these rock pools are slippery. Put aside a day or two this week to explore all that Kings Beach has to offer!
2. Point Artwright Rockpools Access #85
At Point Artwright Rock Pools Access #85, there is an abundance of different attractions that are perfect for picnics and days out. The nearby rotunda provides not only seating but also toilets, while the rocky shoreline gives way to an array of fascinating creatures living in the rockpools.
Here you can find a wide range of shells and other ocean life, such as Scotch bonnets, cockles, sun ray venus and scallops – plus all the usual inhabitants including periwinkles, chitons, anemones and barnacles.
For those who enjoy shell hunting there is plenty to make this particular spot a go-to destination for a family outing or day out with friends. Just remember to take precautions with small children – look but don’t touch, beauty can come with a sting.
3. The Broadwalk
This delightful walk to a patrolled beach surrounded by trees is an ideal activity for small kids. Your children can ride their scooters or bikes, or take a leisurely stroll, taking in the beauty of their natural surroundings.
Along the path, you will get a spectacular view of Mount Coolum rising up into the air and its rugged terrain standing out against the sky.
At the entrance of the walk lies Curlys cafe, which looks to be quite popular – it’s best to call ahead and book if you wish to dine there. Whilst they don’t have any specific kids area, they do provide high chairs.
You could always grab a coffee and make your way down to the boardwalk before playing on the sand – it’s an excellent start to any day!
4. Shelly Beach
Shelly Beach is a well-known rocky coastline offering a plethora of adventures for visitors. Rockpools are scattered across the shore, inviting curious explorers to come and discover the many creatures that reside within them.
You might encounter from crabs attempting to scurry away unseen upon sensing your presence, to vibrant blue soft coral that must be avoided due to its slippery nature.
Shelly Beach also offers a small playground and BBQ facilities as well as nearby eateries such as the Joe Crow Stormbird. There are plenty of tables and benches to relax on while soaking up the sun or enjoying a cupcake from the café.

5. Point Cartwright Rockpool
Point Cartwright Rockpools provides a stunning view of both Mooloolaba and Kawana beach.
It’s the idyllic spot for picnics and to take in the sights of the coast.
Among other things, this rock pool paradise is home to sea cucumbers, sea hares and hermit crabs. Depending on the tide, it is also possible to take a walk along the coast all the way around Point Cartwright.
The beach isn’t patrolled, but there are plenty of rocks for rock-hopping. At times you might even get lucky and spot dolphins swimming around the area.
If you’re feeling adventurous, there is also the option to walk up and around the lighthouse located on Pacific Boulevard. Once at the top, you can take in the breathtaking view of the coast from the lighthouse.
Things to Consider Before Going on Rock Pools and Boardwalks With Your Kids
When planning a day trip to the beach with your kids, it’s important to consider their age, physical ability and safety. Depending on the ages of your children, you may need to bring along extra items such as life jackets or flotation devices for younger children.
It’s also important to make sure there is an adult with them at all times while exploring rock pools and boardwalks. Consider bringing along some protective clothing too, like flip flops, sun hats and light jackets so they can stay comfortable during the cooler parts of the day.
Moreover, it is important to be vigilant at all times when it comes to your children playing in rock pools. They should be reminded to look but not touch – as some animals may not appear dangerous at first glance yet can still be highly poisonous.
