In a groundbreaking study conducted across Alberta, results revealed that the key to cultivating a love for fruits and vegetables lies in involving them in meal preparation.
Yes, you read that right! By simply giving your child the opportunity to become a sous chef in the kitchen, you can ignite their taste buds and transform their relationship with healthy food.
Lead author Yen Li Chu, a postdoctoral fellow in the School of Public Health, explains, “Kids who like both fruits and vegetables will eat them more and have better diets. Encouraging your kids to get involved in meal preparation could be the best health promotion strategy for both schools and parents.”
Imagine the joy of witnessing your child eagerly chopping colourful veggies, stirring aromatic sauces, and savouring the delicious meals they helped create. The survey conducted in 151 schools across Alberta revealed that nearly one-third of children already assist with meal prep at least once a day, while another one-third lend a hand one to three times a week. Not only did the children who participated in cooking express a stronger preference for both fruits and vegetables, but their vegetable preference was 10% higher than their peers who didn’t join in the culinary adventures.

Co-author Paul Veugelers, a Canada Research Chair in Population Health at the University of Alberta, emphasises the broader impact of healthier eating. He shares, “Good food is important for us. It keeps weight gain away — and more important than that, it keeps chronic disease away. The overarching objective of our work is to lower the burden of chronic disease in our society. A healthy diet is right at the top.”
