Sydney – Tuesday, 14 November 2023 – In a deluge of musical notes, vibrant wildlife on stage, and an outpouring of creative imagination, the Sydney Opera House today lifted the curtain on its exceptional 2024 Kids and Families Program.
We’re thrilled to announce a lineup brimming with international performances, circus antics, and captivating theatre works adapted from revered books. Our program plans will cater to diverse interests and ages, taking young audiences on a joyous journey of discovery!
The Sydney Opera House’s Head of Children, Families and Creative Learning, Tamara Harrison, lovingly described her vision for the 2024 program. She emphasized the program’s essence as an “inspiring collection of local and international performances for children, families, and young people that travels far and wide with shows from Switzerland, Ireland, and around Australia.”
She expressed excitement over the program’s rich assortment of artforms, offering kids the opportunity to explore everything from book adaptations, circus, and film, to First Nations perspectives, acrobatics, and dance. Throughout the changing seasons of the year, our stages will host a plethora of performances designed to captivate, educate, and spur the creative abilities of our young patrons. The Sydney Opera House offers both seasonal and year-round performances to cater to varying schedules. Here are some program highlights:
Under the warmth of the Summer sun, popular Creative Play workshops return with Drip Drop Play, where children aged 3-12 can create soundscapes using ice and water. Fans of Dav Pilkey’s bestselling book, Dog Man, has been transformed into DOG MAN: The Musical, an epic musical adventure for kids aged 6+.
In Autumn, learn about the power of true friendship with the Australian premiere of the acclaimed Irish play, Polar Bear and Penguin. Direct from Switzerland, a fast-paced and hilarious dance celebration, Game Theory, for kids aged 8+.
During Winter, we’ll bring to life the magic of Roald Dahl’s beloved novel, James and the Giant Peach, on stage. A poignant production about hope, The River That Ran Uphill, based on one man’s survival of Cyclone Pam.
When Spring flowers blossom, join the world-renowned Flying Fruit Fly Circus in Big Sky, showcasing 12 young performers aged 10 to 18.
In addition to these seasonal spectacle, we also feature a year-round program. A melodic highlight is Kids Music Café, a beautiful introduction to live music and instruments for babies and toddlers.
