Time Travel to Middle Ages: Kryal Castle Celebrates 50 Years of Jousting in Australia

Let’s buckle up for a spectacular time travel trip, as Kryal Castle is set to celebrate a notable milestone – 50 swoon-worthy years of jousting in Australia. This charismatic castle in Ballarat is the stunning stage for the annual Victorian Medieval Festival, promising to make this year’s occasion the grandest yet!

The Ultimate Battle for Glory

On the weekend of 18th-19th November 2023, Kryal Castle will echo with the rattling of armour and the clamour of competition. Armoured knights will contest for the ultimate prize – to be crowned the jousting champion on this landmark anniversary.

Medieval Merriment Unleashed

The festival, graced over two days, features an enthralling extravaganza of Viking battles, jousting knights, and a living history village that depicts life in the Middle Ages. Calling all foodies and families, a night-time food market, a medieval tavern, and a host of fun kids’ activities adds to the cheerful chaos.

As Bart Hamilton, the General Manager notes, the festival will give a fascinating glimpse into the life and times of the Middle Ages. Plus, it’s not all about entertainment – it’s an invaluable educational opportunity for the whole family.

Charting the Course of Jousting in Australia

Phil Leitch, our resident Kryal Castle knight, recalls that it was 1973 when Australia saw the first public joust. “Since then we’ve had three Australian World Champions and countless Australian team victories over teams in Europe, America, and the Pacific,” he muses.

This year’s jousting tournament will be the biggest Australia has seen with more than 30 national competitors vying. Among these gallant contestants, three are former world champions, amplifying the promise of an electrifying competition.
